Description

The Wolf Nebula, cataloged as SL17 (Sandqvist and Lindroos 17), is an infrequently-imaged dark nebula seen in the constellation of Scorpius.  The nebula, sometimes also called the 'Fenrir’ Nebula from Norse mythology, is named as such to reflect its remarkable resemblance to a wolf.

Dark nebulae such as SL17 are dense molecular clouds, including interstellar dust and gas, that can obscure light from the background stars and otherwise brighter regions of space. The red areas surrounding SL17 are emission nebulae, including ionized hydrogen and many stars (RCW113, aka Gum 55).

This HaRGB image is based on unguided acquisition of RGB (137x 5 min) and Ha (50x10min) data.  The picture was processed in PixInsight.  The Ha images were used to enhance both the colour and luminance of the RGB data in order to highlight the features of SL17 and its surroundings.
